Good Morning Everyone:
It’s my job! It’s my passion! I always go over each and every BCAS music event in my mind and determine what went well, and what do we still need to do. Here is a basic overview of what we did last night.
At the beginning of rehearsal last night, I set our goal which was to go over each piece (all except one) for notes, rhythms, and musicality thrown in. I’d give us a B+ for most of the pieces. With our hands tied behind our backs in many regards – masks, sitting 3′ apart, and in an acoustically difficult space, I was quite grateful that as the rehearsal went on we became more and more aware of the musical nuances to this beautiful set of pieces. The 3 numbers I ask you to pay particular attention to this week are, IS HE WORTHY?; ALWAY SOMETHING SINGS; and SONG OF THE WANDERER. We still don’t own those melodies and rhythms. Our singing of these particular pieces are not natural or confident, therefore lack musicality. Knowing notes and rhythms cold will help these immensely.
I will have the schedule for next Wednesday’s rehearsal in the next few days. In the meantime I strongly suggest you check my score markings, and watch and listen to YouTube performances of those particular pieces.
I have heard already from 2 singers who Zoomed last night. One said she could hear all 4 parts, something that is elusive in person in those acoustics, and several things were cleared up for her. Another said, the music starts to get into the soul, especially watching the process of rehearsal.
May I also strongly suggest that if you’re not going to be attending in person rehearsal, you Zoom. Word on the street is that didn’t sound like something anyone really wanted to do, but now the Zoom option is an enormously viable one during these trying times.
Talk to you soon,
M
