Solo Possibilities Procedure for RIV – 2018

Hello Everyone:

As we re-enter from Easter vacation bliss, I want to relate our solo plans and procedures this year for auditioning for the RIV.

Here’s what we’ll do for said solos:

  • I will hear ALL members who want to be considered for a solo, whether it is in a medley already or whether it is a ‘stand-alone’ solo, on two separate occasions, Wednesday night, April 25th and Wednesday night, May 2nd. Both of these audition possibilities will be held before our regular rehearsal, from 6:00 – 6:55 each of those two Wednesdays.  We’ll adjust for any extenuating circumstances.
  • You can send me an email at mgiambrone2@verizon.net and I will sign you up, or you can wait until this coming Wednesday, April 11th to physically add your name and what you will be doing to the sheets provided on the tables as you enter.
  • If you send me an email before next Wednesday, the 11th, make sure you tell me when you want to come, and what you will be singing. Ex:  April 25th, Marcia Giambrone, 6:15, ‘Send In The Clowns’, or May 2nd, Barbra Streisand, 6:05, Look to the Rainbow, opening solo.
  • If you are not sure what you want to do within the next week, you will be able to add your name on the following week, April 18th, but no later. I can’t guarantee you a prime time since others will speak for those spots.  Each auditioner will have 5 minutes to sing for me. First come, first served.

Some of you have inquired as what kinds of ‘stand-alone’ solos might be appropriate for our RIV audience for this particular concert.  I did some thinking about this.  Our audience shifts from year to year.  There are lots of attendees who know the old standard shows – King and I and West Side Story. Others. Younger who are well connected to today’s shows.  Here are some thoughts:

  • God Help The Outcasts – Hunchback – (female – hits a low F)
  • Out There – Hunchback
  • Alive – Hunchback – (male)
  • Hellfire – Hunchback – (male)
  • Make Them Hear You – Ragtime – (male)
  • Your Daddy’s Son – Ragtime – (female)
  • This Is The Moment – Jekyll and Hyde – (male)
  • Someone Like You – Jekyll and Hyde – (female)
  • In His Eyes – Jekyll and Hyde – (two females)
  • Memories – Cats – (female)
  • I Don’t Know How to Love Him – Superstar – (female)
  • Burn! –Hamilton – (female)
  • If I Were A Rich Man – Fiddler- (male)
  • The Wizard and I – Wicked – (female)
  • For Good – Wicked – (female)

There are many more.  A further explanation of some solos we might do.  If your music indicates unison (unis.), I may consider a solo voice for that.  They are all over Hunchback.  As you prepare for your audition, think of your voice, your range, the audience and whether it fits you and fits into our repertoire for this set of RIV pieces this year………….and whether there is music for it.

And……………………

The criteria will always be:  GOOD INTONATION, and GOOD TONE as the top two qualities I ask for.

As usual, send me an email with your questions regarding any and all of this.  I know this is a bit new for our newer members, but I hope you will all trust me that once we put this all together, our audience will, once again, be treated to a wonderful afternoon of BROADWAY AND BEYOND.  I hope it doesn’t snow on June 3rd.!!!!!!!!!!!

Best to you all.  I missed you on Wednesday,

Marcia
